Kaspersky Lab has uncovered a set of malicious Android applications posing as security software. The malware is linked to the infamous Zeus ...
McAfee has launched Mobile Security 2.0, a comprehensive suite that adds app management and text/voice blocking features on top of anti-virus and anti-theft protection first seen in last year's McAfee Mobile Security.
The app costs $29.99 a year for new users and can be downloaded from the Android Market. Existing McAfee Mobile Security subscribers get a free update. The tool is also available for BlackBerry and Symbian users, but without app protection.
"It is increasingly clear that using a smartphone without security means any sensitive information, such as photos, bank account information or company data on that mobile device is at risk of falling into the wrong hands," said said John Thode, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer, Mobile and Small Business at McAfee, in a statement.
Like Lookout Mobile Security and Norton Mobile Security 2.0, McAfee Mobile Security 2.0 offers an "App Alert" feature that lets users review every permission required by an app. This is powerful information because checking for dubious app permissions is one of the easiest ways to detect a malicious app. This also keeps the consumer informed of the kinds of information an app harvests. So for instance, if you're uncomfortable with the new Wikipedia app for Android tracking your location, you can opt to have McAfee remove this app from your smartphone.
McAfee also offers an online portal to help you locate and recover a lost or stolen phone. From the portal you can check the phone's location, activate a piercingly loud alarm, lock the device, or wipe all personal data. You can also accomplish any of these tasks by sending a coded SMS message to the phone.
For a limited time McAfee is offering a free, 7-day trial.
