HTC CEO Peter Chou is looking to reverse his company's recent decline. Could the "HTC Congressional" be the answer?

A new Android Ice Cream Sandwich phone with Beats Audio, and the first major 4G Windows Phone handset, are coming from HTC in 2012, according to a report out this morning.
Boy Genius Report says a "trusted source" tells the blog that it's all part of a plan to switch up the company's strategy a bit in the New Year, beginning with the "HTC Titan-like" LTE Windows Phone on AT&T, currently set for a February 5 release, according to BGR. In addition, Boy Genius says a new handset called the HTC Elite will be flying the Android flag highest for the Taiwan-based company in 2012. It seems the phone will also launch on AT&T and could be called the HTC Congressional--I'm already preparing my one-liners for that possibility. Whatever it may be called, it will have Android 4.0 and Beats Audio and can be expected roughly in April, says BGR.
CNET is checking with our own sources to try to verify BGR's claims and track down more details. We'll let you know what we find out.
We do know that previously, HTC has said that it's putting a lot of faith in a new direction for 2012 to reverse the company's current decline.
"We will focus on the product next year, better and more competitive," HTC Chief Financial Officer Winston Yung told Reuters last month. "Other than new LTE phones for the U.S. market, we also have phones for the global market. We will launch some worldwide flagship products. We're confident in them."
In figures reported by the company last month, HTC sales took a big dip year-over-year. After quickly rising from zero to hero, HTC has had a rough ride recently--getting lapped by Samsung in the Android handset market, grappling with its ongoing legal battles involving the likes of Apple, and being passed over by carriers that have turned to the competition to build the latest round of flagship phones. My colleague Roger Cheng has covered HTC's current struggles in depth.
While the word is that AT&T gets first dibs on these rumored new flagship phones we're hearing about today, Verizon has also said it's working on something big with HTC.
"We're going to do some things that will stand out for Verizon and HTC," Verizon Wireless' Chief Marketing Officer Marni Walden told CNET recently.
I'll keep an eye out for that. Let's just hope they ignore HTC's naming suggestions. I absolutely will not buy the new HTC "Senatorial" or the brand-new "Filibuster phone from Verizon," even if it comes with Android 6.0 or 5G.
