Google's Android has captured more than 50 percent of the U.S. smartphone market for the first time, according to Tuesday stats from comScor ...
HTC took a hit during the quarter thanks to continued competition from rivals like Samsung and Apple.
Revenue dropped 35 percent year over year to about $151 million, while net profit plunged 70 percent to about $148 million, according to brief stats released by the handset maker.
The numbers come the same week that HTC announced its EVO 4G LTE, one of the first smartphones to support Sprint's LTE network, as well as the first LTE device to sport the EVO brand.
According to data released this week by comScore, HTC was the number five handset maker in the U.S. between November and February behind Samsung, LG, Apple, and Motorola. HTC had 6.3 percent of the U.S. mobile market in February, which was up from 5.9 percent in November.
During a February call with analysts, HTC chief financial officer Winston Yung pledged to take a more "focused approach" in the months to come. "I think simply, we dropped the ball on products," Yung said at the time.
HTC will not put all its eggs into one basket, however. "We will never become an Apple that has only one iPhone," Yung said.
"We're very willing to listen to our customers and tailor our products ... and that will not change," he continued. "We are talking about ... a more focused approach but we're not talking about a dramatic reduction in models."
Still, "there will be a few hero products that we strongly support with our R&D resources and marketing resources to make sure these products do not get outspent from a marketing point of view by our competitors," Yung continued, claiming that those gadgets will rival the iPhone or the Galaxy S line.
At this point, HTC will still focus its efforts on Android and Windows Phone devices, according to Yung. "We have the ability to develop our own operating system, [but] the key question is ... whether it is too late to develop a new eco-system," he said.
HTC's major release at the end of last year was the Beats-enhanced HTC Rezound for Verizon, as well as the HTC Titan. In August, HTC announced a $300 million investment in Beats Audio to bring its high-quality sound to HTC devices.
In the fourth quarter, HTC had to contend with the long-awaited release of the iPhone 4S. Apple went on to sell more than 37 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, while Samsung sold about 34 million smartphones during the same time period, according to February data from Gartner. HTC sold about 10.8 million devices overall in the fourth quarter, which included smartphones and feature phones.
