A couple of former Google workers named Maneesh Arora, and Amit Sangani set out to create a tool to allow people able to read and reply to text messages sent to an Android device no matter what device they happen to be using. The duo’s product has been in beta testing for several months, and has now launched and is officially called MightyText. The goal was to create an app for Android users similar to Apple iMessage, it reminds me a lot of Google Voice too.
The app launched in beta under the name Texty before being renamed MightyText this month. It had been available as a Chrome extension that landed 250,000 users sending more than 2 million messages daily. The developer duo used the success of their Chrome extension to raise $650,000 in funding to develop the app. In a nutshell, the app lets any Android user send and receive SMS text messages from just about any device, just as they would with their Andorid smartphone in their hands.
Using the app, text messages can be sent to any user on any device. It also allows MMS messages to be made as well. The important bit for the app though is that it syncs with the users existing Android number rather than requiring you to get a new phone number as Google Voice does. It also organizes all texts, picture messages, and phone calls allowing them to be searched more easily and stores them securely. The app is sort of a remote access tool for your Android phone from any device be it a computer, web browser, or another smartphone. The coolest part for me is that when you send a text message from your computer or even your iPad, the person you’re texting can’t tell you’re not on your Android phone.
